It is no secret that the male-dominated culture of sciences and engineering make it difficult for women to enter into these fields. Females have encountered exclusion, sexual harassment, and other forms of discrimination due to their gender.
Few women wish to endure such things at work, and so this creates a low percentage of females in these fields, which ultimately creates few role models for women wishing to enter. Becoming a mathematics professor for Harvard University at the age of 30, Sophie Morel is a great role model for today’s female math students. There was not however always role models for female mathematicians.
~Did you know: Sophie Morel was recently granted a tenured position at Harvard University, making her the first tenured female research professor in the mathematics department in over 374 years? Way to go, Sophie!~
Programs such as Techsploration that connect female students with role models in the sciences, mathematics, engineering and trade fields are a tremendous help in today’s society.
